Steven R. Gumins
Mr. Gumins is the founder and Managing Member of Athens Capital Management, LLC (ACM) , and the General Partner of Athens Steady Return Fund, LP. He is the Fund’s portfolio manager and is responsible for the Fund’s business development.
Mr. Gumins has over 40 years experience in building investment services for high net worth individuals. He started his career in 1981 with Merrill Lynch, followed by Lehman Brothers. Mr. Gumins held various senior sales, marketing and management positions within the industry before he started his own independent third party placement services company for selected hedge funds.
Mr. Gumins’ investment career has been punctuated by a couple of noteworthy endeavors. He worked as an independent futures trader for 3 years (1988-1991), which included time on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Mr. Gumins also served as CEO (1994-1997) for a disruptive startup software company, Heuristic Development Corp, that was based on early smart card technology.
Mr. Gumins earned his B.A. from the University of New York in Buffalo with course work in Cuernavaca, Mexico and pursued graduate studies in Santiago, Chile. He holds Series 7 and Series 63 licenses, is affiliated with Silver Leaf Partners, LLC and is fluent in Spanish.
Brian Torres, CPA
Mr. Torres joined Athens Capital Management LLC in 2009 as the firm’s Chief Financial Officer. In addition to overseeing the accounting and financial reporting aspects of the company, Mr. Torres also advises on business related matters for the firm.
Prior to joining Athens, Mr. Torres was an Operations Manager with Spectrum
Global Fund Administration where he oversaw the financial reporting for various hedge funds including the firm’s largest client. Prior to Spectrum, Mr. Torres was the Treasurer for Mansur Capital Corporation and the Ontario Partners Funds, where he oversaw all accounting and financial reporting aspects including the firm’s compliance requirements.
Mr. Torres brings over 25 years of accounting experience to the firm including twenty years in the investment and securities business. He holds a B.B.A. in accounting from Loyola University Chicago and is a licensed Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst.
Deborah Griffin
Ms. Griffin is the Chief Operating Officer of Athens Capital Management LLC and has been a key executive since inception of the firm in 2002. She brings several years of entrepreneurial and business management expertise to Athens, including prior management positions with three successful business ventures. She was the Chief Operating Officer at Heuristic Development Group, where she assisted Mr. Gumins in the successful development and eventual sale of that firm. Previously, she was the Vice President of Operations at Ziff-Davis Expositions, a division of the largest computer publishing company in the world, and earlier she was the Director of Operations of Seybold Seminars, where she assisted Jonathan Seybold directly in the successful development of the firm and eventual sale to Ziff-Davis Publications.
